~ Museum receives 2020 AMA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Collection Care Conservation for the Museum’s Weapons Conservation Lab.

WHY: The Arkansas National Guard Museum is a recipient of a 2020 AMA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Collection Care Conservation for the Museum’s Weapons Conservation Lab. The AMA awards competition recognizes excellence within Arkansas museums and celebrates the accomplishments of their work.
“We planned and worked for more than three years to put the lab together,” said Museum director, Ray Screws.
The Arkansas National Guard Museum lab is modeled after the one at the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby, Miss. Screws said the lab director of the museum at Camp Shelby came to the Arkansas National Guard Museum to train volunteers.
The Weapons Conservation Lab utilizes professional standards to ensure the Museum’s weapons collection will be available for display for generations. Volunteers are trained and certified to conduct the work.
Museum professionals from across the state were involved in the process of selecting the AMA Awards competition winners. Winning entries demonstrated outstanding achievement in four areas including: education, exhibitions, media, and personnel.
The winners were announced during the 2020 Arkansas Museums Association Annual Meeting held via Zoom on Sept. 15.
