188th Wing Executes Major Static Aircraft Move in Preparation for Base Construction

On Friday, July 11, 2025, the 188th Wing undertook a massive logistical operation, relocating six historic static display aircraft currently on loan from the National Museum of the United States Air Force. These aircraft, long-standing symbols of the wing’s proud heritage, were safely moved from Ebbing Air National Guard Base to make way for upcoming construction projects.
The operation was a true team effort, bringing together Airmen, retirees, and community partners in a display of coordination, problem-solving, and muscle.
๐Ÿ”ง Key Highlights:
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ 188th Civil Engineer Squadron: Prepped the site, constructed ramps, removed fences, and operated heavy equipment while troubleshooting unexpected challenges mid-move.
๐Ÿšœ 85th Fighter Group: Provided towing personnel and managed airfield driving coordination.
๐Ÿ”ฉ 188th Logistics Readiness Squadron: Secured critical tie-downs and borrowed wheel skates from the 138th Fighter Wing (OK ANG) when gear issues popped up.
๐Ÿ” 188th Security Forces Squadron: Protected the flight line, redirected traffic, and ensured smooth security transitions throughout the move.
๐Ÿ“œ 188th Wing Historical Property Custodians: Coordinated with the National Museum and ensured proper procedures for moving the aircraft.
๐Ÿค Fort Smith Chamber: Coordinated with Signature Air for towing support and to host the statics at their location during construction.
๐Ÿงฐ Retired & Current Crew Chiefs: Maintenance experts from across the wing and even retired members stepped up to share their knowledge and guide safe relocation.
These aircraft will be housed at Signature Air for approximately three years while the base’s main gate and entry road are repositioned. Once complete, they’ll return to proudly greet every Airman and guest entering Ebbing ANG Base.
๐ŸŽ‰ Huge thank you to everyone who helped, plus special thanks and shout-out to Capt. Thomas Phalen for providing the photos and information! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ˜Ž
